NCLEX Exam in India: Everything You Need to Know

What is NCLEX Examination?

NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is a computer-adaptive exam that nursing graduates must pass to obtain licensure in the USA, Canada, and Australia. It evaluates the essential knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to provide safe and effective nursing care to patients of all ages in diverse healthcare settings.

NCLEX Requirements: NCLEX PN vs NCLEX RN

To qualify for the NCLEX-PN exam, candidates must complete a practical or vocational nursing program. Upon graduation, they must request Authorization to Test (ATT) from their nursing regulatory body (NRB). Once approved, they can proceed with exam registration.

For the NCLEX-RN exam, candidates must complete a registered nursing program. After finishing their studies, they must apply to their NRB for ATT approval. Once granted, they can then register for the NCLEX-RN exam.

NCLEX Exam Overview

  • Exam Content

The NCLEX evaluates nursing knowledge, client health needs (where ‘client’ refers to an individual, family, or group), and integrated processes such as clinical judgment, communication, and documentation. The test is based on client needs for both RN and PN exams, with most questions requiring higher-level cognitive skills. If a client's age is not specified, assume the client is an adult.

  • Exam Development

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) conducts a practice analysis every three years to update the NCLEX test plan. A Continuous Practice Analysis is also carried out to validate the current content. Nursing instructors (item writers) create questions, which are reviewed by a panel of practicing nurses. All questions undergo pretesting to ensure they meet NCSBN’s statistical standards before they are scored.

  • Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT)

The NCLEX uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) to tailor questions to a candidate’s ability, providing more accurate results with fewer questions. Each answer updates the ability estimate, increasing the precision of the test. Pretest items are initially unscored and are only included once their difficulty has been statistically validated.

  • NCLEX Preparation

Candidates are provided guidance on answering test items, and a tutorial is available before the exam day. For comprehensive NCLEX preparation, consider joining BridgeWay NCLEX Readiness Course.
