Quick Guide on Relocating to the U.S. as a Nurse

You have taken the step and have made a commitment but perhaps you do not know where to start. Relocating to a new country can be challenging, but with proper planning and research, you can make a smooth transition and start a successful nursing career in the United States US. As human beings, many of us are wired to maintain our status quo. Change is daunting, uncomfortable, and anxiety-inducing, and yet, it is inevitable.

We have outlined a few tips to help you.

Research, research, research.

1.      Start with the job market and the existing opportunities. The healthcare industry in America is highly competitive so it’s imperative that you understand the demand for nurses in the state that you are interested in.

2.      Find out about visa and immigration requirements. There are many types of visas that are issued and it is important that you understand the visa and immigration requirements for working, studying, and living in the US. The website for Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is a good place to start.

3.      Licensing and certification. Each country has its requirements when it comes to being able to practice as a nurse. In the US, licensing, and certification vary from state to state. It is therefore important for you to be aware in order to obtain the necessary credentials. For one to practice as a registered nurse, one must sit and pass their NCLEX.

4.      Cost of living. As you look to relocate, it is important to understand the financial side of things. Whether you are moving alone or with family, how much would you need to earn in order to cater not only to your short-term but also long-term expenses? How will this move impact your current lifestyle? The cost of living varies from state to state and forward planning will let you know if you can afford to live there.
